Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week is a time to raise awareness of the emotional and mental wellbeing of mothers, and to remind women that support is available at every stage of their journey.
Becoming a parent is often described as one of life’s most joyful experiences, but it can also bring challenges. From pregnancy through to early parenthood and beyond, many women experience changes in their mental health. Feelings of anxiety, low mood, overwhelm, or isolation are more common than people might think.
At CPSL Mind, we recognise that every parent’s experience is different. There is no “right” way to feel, and it’s important to acknowledge both the highs and the difficulties that can come with motherhood.
Understanding maternal mental health
Maternal mental health covers a wide range of experiences. Some women may feel anxious about the future, struggle with sleep or confidence, or feel disconnected from those around them. Others may find it difficult to adjust to the changes that come with caring for a child.
These feelings can be influenced by many factors, including physical recovery, changes in identity, relationship pressures, financial concerns, or a lack of support. For some, these challenges can develop into more significant mental health difficulties, such as postnatal depression or anxiety.
Breaking the silence
One of the biggest barriers to getting support is the feeling that you have to cope on your own. Many parents feel pressure to appear as though they are managing, which can make it harder to open up about how they are really feeling.
Talking about mental health can be a powerful first step. Whether it’s with a friend, partner, family member, or a professional, sharing your experiences can help you feel less alone and more supported.
It’s important to remember that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is a positive step towards taking care of yourself and your wellbeing.
Support for parents at CPSL Mind
At CPSL Mind, we provide a range of support for parents across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and South Lincolnshire through our Perinatal Service.
We offer a flexible range of support options, including:
- One-to-one sessions tailored to your needs
- Peer support groups and courses
- Practical and emotional support during early parenthood
Our aim is to create safe, supportive spaces where parents can talk openly, build confidence, and find ways to manage the challenges they are facing.
We also recognise that mental health during this time affects the whole family. That is why we offer dedicated support for dads as part of our service, ensuring that both parents feel heard, supported, and included.
What parents say about our service
“I enjoyed that the group wasn’t a baby group about the babies. Even though we all had little ones, it was about us as mums. People were honest in the sessions, and it showed that others are equally struggling in their own ways, and it just felt nice to not be alone.”
“It gave me the chance to connect and speak about how I had been feeling. Also helped to make me feel that I am not strange to have these feelings and that others do too. It made me feel less lonely and that I did have people there to help me.”
“Helped with my anxiety and get out and meet other mums. I now feel like others understand me and I no longer feel alone as so many others can relate.”
“it has helped me more than any other service!”
“It was brilliant, I felt listened and felt like I could say anything and not be judged.”
“I now feel like I am doing a good job at being a mum and feel like I can manage my mental health better since going to the groups. It’s been so nice to meet other mums who are going through similar things.”
Taking small steps
If you are struggling, even small steps can make a difference. This might include:
- Talking to someone you trust
- Taking time to rest when you can
- Getting outside for fresh air
- Being kind to yourself and adjusting expectations
Everyone’s journey is different, and it’s okay to take things one step at a time.
You’re not alone
At CPSL Mind, we believe that no one should have to face a mental health problem alone. We are here to support you, wherever you are on your journey.
If you are finding things difficult, reaching out for support can be the first step towards feeling more like yourself again.
