Thriving local Games Group brings a community together

See how the Earls Spencer Court local games group in Peterborough came alive with the help of CPSL Minds Good Life Fund.

The Earls Spencer Court local Games Group has launched in Peterborough thanks to the help of CPSL Mind’s Good Life Fund. The local games group is available to all residents and helps keep them active and connected, as well as encouraging conversations and friendships.

The Games Group was the idea of residents Stuart and Ruth, who, having seen how many people living at the small complex barely left their four walls, felt they needed to bring the community together.

Stuart and Ruth began thinking of an idea… and soon they had their lightbulb moment. “We thought, ‘What about getting people down to the communal ground we have to play some games?’” says Stuart.

With the help of CPSL Mind’s Good Life Fund, which offers grants of up to £1,500 for projects that help local communities, the Games Group came alive.
Soon, what started as a handful of people meeting at the Earl Spencer Court Community Room on a Friday evening had expanded into Friday afternoon and evening, plus other weekdays, too.

24/7 Rummy Cub!

“You’ll even find a group of people playing Rummy Cub on Saturdays – some people here would play it 24/7,” laughs Stuart. “They wouldn’t go to sleep!”

“I have such a laugh,” adds Carol, a resident at Earls Spencer Court. “It’s lovely because when you’ve been on your own a long time, you get used to your own company. But it’s nice to come and just join in with everybody.”

What is the Good Life Fund?

The Good Life Fund offers grants of up to £1500 to people in our local community to help set up groups that connect people, such as book clubs, craft classes, or activities that encourage people to learn new skills.
