Rosie’s SwimRun Challenge: Racing Through Windermere for CPSL Mind

When Rosie Cave signed up for her first SwimRun event, she wasn’t just chasing a physical challenge – she was raising vital funds for mental health. As both a fundraiser and Night Light Café volunteer, Rosie shares how movement, nature, and community have supported her wellbeing, and why she chose to give back to CPSL Mind.

On Saturday 14th June, Rosie Cave took on a challenge that pushed her physically, mentally, and emotionally – the Great North SwimRun, set in and around the breathtaking landscape of Lake Windermere.

The event covered a total of 12.6km, split across multiple swimming and running stages: three swims and three runs in total. But this wasn’t your typical endurance race. Unlike a triathlon, SwimRun events require participants to carry everything they need from start to finish. That means running in a wetsuit and swimming in trainers – a unique challenge that adds both difficulty and adventure.

“I had the best time completing the SwimRun event,” Rosie shares. “This was my very first organised event for both swimming and running. While I’ve been swimming for many years, I only started running about a year ago, so it felt like a huge milestone.”

Understandably, Rosie felt nervous on the morning of the event – especially with unpredictable weather forecasts – but the atmosphere on the day quickly lifted her spirits.

“The energy of the event completely changed my mood. The atmosphere was buzzing, with a real sense of excitement and camaraderie. The course itself was fantastic – winding trails, open water swims, and beautiful scenery throughout. It pushed me in all the right ways and reminded me just how rewarding it is to step outside your comfort zone.”

This may have been Rosie’s first SwimRun, but it certainly won’t be her last.

Why This Challenge, and Why Now?

After completing a month-long trek in Nepal last year, Rosie was looking for something new – a challenge that would push her in a different way, while helping her stay grounded and well.

“Exercise and being in nature have always played a huge role in supporting my mental health, helping me stay grounded during tough times,” she explains. “I needed something to work towards that combined those elements.”

Running, in particular, had always been something Rosie admired from afar. “It’s a sport I’ve always wanted to get into, but I never quite believed I was capable or ‘good enough.’ I started running about a year ago, and eventually I knew I needed to prove to myself that I could do it – really commit and push beyond those doubts.”

Swimming came more naturally, but combining it with running and tackling hills, lakes, and distance in one continuous effort brought a new level of challenge. “The SwimRun event ticked all the boxes: a mix of hilly trail runs and open water swims, set against stunning scenery. It felt like the perfect challenge – something that would stretch me both physically and mentally, but also give me the joy of being out in nature.”

But this journey was never just about personal growth. Rosie also wanted to give back – and give back in a way that truly mattered.

A Cause Close to Her Heart

Rosie chose to raise funds for CPSL Mind, an organisation that’s played a meaningful role in her life and in the lives of many in her community.

“For the past few years, I’ve volunteered at my local Night Light Café – a free, safe evening space for anyone struggling with life’s challenges. Through this role, I’ve seen firsthand the powerful, positive impact that this service, and other CPSL Mind initiatives like the Good Mood Cafés, have had on individuals in our community. These spaces offer more than just support – they offer connection, belonging, and hope, at a time when many people are feeling increasingly isolated and alone.”

Her connection to the cause became even more personal last year, during a difficult period in her own life.

“Even though I was there as a volunteer, the Night Light Café became a source of comfort and support for me too. The warmth, understanding, and solidarity I found in that community helped carry me through. I often find myself thinking how much I would have benefited from something like this when I was younger – and that’s why I’m passionate about making sure these services continue to exist and grow.”

With an amazing £1,431 raised, Rosie’s fundraising will support services like our Night Light Cafés, Good Mood Cafés, and other local initiatives that offer vital mental health support in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, and South Lincolnshire.

What’s Next?

While Rosie’s still riding the high from completing her first SwimRun, she’s already looking ahead to her next challenge.

“I’m already thinking about what to take on next – possibly a triathlon. First, though, I need to learn how to ride a road bike properly… so watch this space!”

In the meantime, she’s taking a well-earned moment to reflect on the journey.

“A huge thank you to all my family and friends, as well as CPSL Mind, for the incredible support throughout my training and leading up to the event. I truly couldn’t have done it without you all.”
