James Gibbs, 42, from Rutland, is gearing up to run the Cambridge Half Marathon to raise funds for CPSL Mind — a cause very close to his heart. With a passion for running, a commitment to mental health, and a drive to give back to his community, James’ journey is both inspiring and deeply personal.
Why James is running for CPSL Mind
“I’m running the Cambridge Half with a friend, and mental health means a lot to me,” James explains. “I’ve had ups and downs with my own mental health, and the past 18 months in particular have shown me just how important it is to look after your mental wellbeing — and to encourage others to speak up.”
James has seen firsthand the difference support services like CPSL Mind can make. “It’s a hugely underappreciated service, and I’m proud to help raise awareness and funds so more people can access the support they need.”
Running for a purpose
James is no stranger to endurance challenges. Over the years, he’s completed the London Marathon, Hadrian’s Wall in two days, the Isle of Wight Ultra, and the Brecon Beacons Ultra. His current training schedule is ambitious: he’s balancing preparation for the Cambridge Half with the Ibiza Marathon in April, Hadrian’s Wall in May, and a 66-mile non-stop route around Rutland later that same month.
“I hope to get around fit and healthy and enjoy the day,” says James. “I’m really looking forward to standing on the start line together — and then reaching the finish line to celebrate what we’ve achieved.”
He’ll be joined by friends and family, as well as his friend Max and his brother Oskar, providing support and encouragement on the day.
James’ top tips for runners and fundraisers
For runners: “Enjoy it, prepare well, and understand your limits.”
For fundraisers: “Don’t be afraid to share personal reasons for supporting a cause. A story adds a personal touch and helps people connect with why the charity matters.”
For anyone struggling with their mental health: “The bravest thing you can do is admit you’re struggling and need help. Once you’ve taken that first step, everything else becomes empowering.”
Introducing Rutland Is Gigantic
James’ commitment to CPSL Mind extends beyond the half marathon. He is launching a new charity initiative rooted in Rutland, called Rutland Is Gigantic. The project challenges the idea that size determines impact, focusing instead on unity, generosity, and shared purpose.
Inspired by the song Gigantic by Will and The People, the initiative celebrates the strength of family and community and the idea that when people unite, they can truly be gigantic.
The inaugural Rutland Is Gigantic event launches on Saturday 7th March 2026 at The Barnsdale, Rutland, the day before the Cambridge Half Marathon. The programme will run throughout spring and summer, with a series of events, promotions, and community-led initiatives designed to encourage participation from individuals, families, schools, businesses, and clubs across Rutland and surrounding areas. More details will be shared soon.
