Supporting New Mums

Becoming pregnant or being a new Mum is a life changing experience for all women. Pregnancy and motherhood is often imagined to be a time of great joy, happiness and excitement. However, the reality for many Mums can be far from this – with women not only coping with huge physical changes but also changes in their emotions, relationships, sleep, routine and other areas of their lives.

For many women being pregnant or a new Mum can be a difficult, exhausting, frightening and stressful experience. Many women also struggle with loneliness especially those without the support of friends and family.

We offer a range of services across Peterborough, Cambridgeshire and South Lincolnshire to support women aged over 18 which you can view below.

Connecting Mums

Connecting Mums

Connecting Mums is a 6 week course that supports pregnant women and new Mums to stay emotionally healthy on their motherhood journey. This service may especially benefit you if you:

• Feel lonely or isolated
• Have a lack of support/close family and friends
• Are single
• Are a young Mum
• Have experienced anxiety or depression in the past
• Have low self-esteem/confidence/mood
• Have English as an additional language
• Are having worrying thoughts

The course focuses on the 5 Ways to Wellbeing and our aim is to bring Mums together which enables them to develop meaningful connections with one another and learn new ways to stay emotionally healthy. It also provides opportunities for you to make new friends, meet other Mums, learn more about yourself, learn relaxation and coping skills as well as increasing your awareness about emotional wellbeing during pregnancy and motherhood.

This course enables you to bring your child along to each session as we have volunteers who are fully DBS checked that are more than happy to lend a hand in looking after your child and giving you a break so that you can focus on you.

Mums Matter

Mums Matter

Mums Matter is an eight week course that has been designed for Mums who are experiencing mental health challenges in the perinatal period. The course was developed by CPSL Mind in conjunction with National Mind and has taken the ideas and suggestions of 30 women with lived experience of perinatal mental health issues and moulded them into a course, utilising best practice and tools to stay well.

The sessions are aimed at women who are experiencing mental health challenges in the perinatal period and are suffering from symptoms such as worrying thoughts, anxiety and postnatal depression. The aim is to provide them with a collection of tools and reminders to nurture themselves to keep well.

The first six sessions of the eight will be structured sessions, with one key theme being delivered each week. The final two sessions of the eight will be unstructured sessions that are community based enabling the women to strengthen their social connections with one another.

Mums Monthly Peer Support Group

Mums Monthly Peer Support Group

This peer group launched in July 2018 and is for women who have accessed either the Connecting Mums course or the Mums Matter course.

This group is volunteer led and it focuses on Mums bringing their skills to the group and sharing those skills with other Mums. It also looks at how we keep ourselves well. This group also aims to keep Mums connected, which enables them to build on their friendships with one another and provide each other with support.

The Mums Monthly Peer Support Group is delivered from a children’s centre, this provides a space for the children to play in a suitable environment and ensures that access can be easily gained. The group offers an open minded and safe environment where Mums can come together and share their similar experiences whilst supporting one another.

The service is for people aged 18 and above who live in Peterborough and are experiencing low to moderate mental health challenges during the perinatal period – by this we mean during pregnancy and up to two years after birth.
