I was delighted to begin a volunteer placement at CPSL Mind in May this year and have loved the opportunity to learn about mental health and be involved in the amazing work of the organisation. Before coming to CPSL Mind, I spent ten years as Chief Executive of Cam Sight, a Cambridgeshire visual impairment charity and a similar length of time with DHIVerse, a local HIV charity as trainer and manager. Prior to having our family, I worked with Community Service Volunteers and was originally a secondary school teacher. Other voluntary placements have included supporting people with mental ill-health in England and America with the Richmond Fellowship and several years as a Samaritan in Cambridge where I helped to train the new volunteers.

On leaving Cam Sight, I was keen to move into mental health. I found that listening to those with suicidal thoughts and wishes as a Samaritan was a powerful experience that I would be glad in some way to return to. It also helped me understand at Cam Sight how traumatic losing your sight can be and the need to place counselling and emotional support at the heart of the organisation. I have therefore greatly appreciated the warm welcome I’ve received and the opportunity to be involved with CPSL Mind’s powerful work in mental health and well-being. Thank you so much.

I have worked for John Lewis Cambridge for ten years in a variety of leadership roles from Personnel, to Visual Merchandising to Selling Departments. My experience has been predominantly been in leading and developing large teams of people in a retail environment.

The John Lewis Partnership runs a Charitable Trust which gives UK registered charities the opportunity to benefit from the skills of its workforce. The Golden Jubilee Trust is an ongoing scheme which allows members of staff (Partners) to be released on full pay to work with a charity in their area. I have a keen interest in mental health/wellbeing and currently study counselling in my spare time. For this reason I decided to apply for, and was successful, in securing a Golden Jubilee Secondment with CPSL Mind.

I have joined as a volunteer in the role of Employee Engagement Manager. My role as Employee Engagement Manager is to support the development of CPSL Mind post-merger identity and establish/embed ways to ensure that everyone feels actively involved and hopefully inspired!

I look after my own wellbeing by running, which I have been doing for a few years now. Recently I ran in the John Lewis team in the Chariots of Fire relay race which is one of Cambridgeshire’s largest annual charity events.  In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors as much as possible, embrace a hygee lifestyle and am passionate about cake.
